'As the implementation date for the new GDPR looms large, there is a real urgency for all organisations to be checking to make sure they have their 'house in order' in time for when the new regime hits on 25 May 2018.

'Third sector challenges

'Although the GDPR will affect all manner of organisations there are particular areas of challenge for those in the third sector, due to their need to engage with the public.

'Despite reassurances from the ICO towards the third sector that it will continue to adopt a pragmatic approach when it comes to fines, and will not seek to make examples of charities for minor infringements, it is impossible to ignore the potential for substantially increased fines being levied. Rather than a maximum fine of £500,000 it will now be possible to be penalised anywhere up to 10-20 million Euros or 2-4% of global turnover depending on the breach of the new data protection rules...'
